How Sagna Rotonda began.
As children, holidays for myself, my wife and friends were the summer trips organized by our church in a mountain refuge between the Grana Valley and the Maira Valley, part of the municipality of Castelmagno. There was “nothing” there, only friends and the mountain and the hikes which they offered, regardless of this, all of us, even 25 years later, have wonderful memories of the weeks spent together. Of course, nowadays this seems unimaginable for today’s youth who are so used to comfort. Still, one summer my wife and I brought our 8 and 4 year old children up to an alpine refuge for two weeks without TVs, telephones and with lighting generated by solar panels. We spent the days hiking, mountain biking or playing in the river.
I think that these were the holidays where we had the most fun.
August 2007
The idea was born of finding a village, a group of houses high up in the mountains, to restructure and to make available to those who still wish to have a genuine place to spend their holidays with family or a group of friends.
September 2007
After visiting some Piedmontese valleys, I returned to the Maira Valley and Marmora, and met Michele Cavarero who introduces me to Emanuele Ponzo, mayor of an active town hall community administration which aims at conserving this territory while preserving its original characteristics. After explaining my ideas, they take me to see some uninhabited refuges in the outskirts of the town, but I was looking for something a bit more isolated, so they bring me to “Sagnarotonda”. The place was perfect, one kilometer from the town with a spectacular view of the valley.
December 2007
Thanks to Emanuele, we are put in contact with the family which owned the buildings who kindly agree to sell us the property.
July 2008
We finally get through all the necessary bureaucracy and are able to start renovations.
September 2008
We meet “Walter Marchisio” a resident of the valley, and to whom we entrust the renovations, set to start in spring 2009.
December 2008
The exceptional three day snowfall which brought two and a half meters of snow, unfortunately, causes the collapse of a part of the roof.
